People don’t usually react well when their way of life is threatened. It’s one thing to disrupt a specific occupation or economic sector, as has happened throughout history, but glibly throwing around platitudes of immanent human obsolescence couched in techno-optimist Utopian promises is naively negligent if not outright dangerous.
Michael Wooldridge has spent over three decades studying artificial intelligence, and he’s not buying the doomsday hype. A professor of computer science at the University of Oxford, Wooldridge believes the real dangers of AI aren’t killer robots or runaway superintelligence—they’re far more mundane, and far more urgent.

- Like “an offer you can’t refuse” to pay attention to, fear cloaked in the language of opportunity is great publicity
- The AI industry needs FOMO to sustain the monumental amount of capital required to keep pumping hot air into the massive bubble that’s making all this possible.
- Threatening the broad business community with a limited window of time before competitive obsolescence is a classic sales tactic.
- Techno-optimists like to point to big scary abstract inevitable disruptions while simultaneously offering nebulous solutions and suggest that “somebody will need to do something about the side effects, but it’s not our job or problem. Governments, please talk with our lobbyists about regulation.”
- If they do happen to be right, and nobody does anything about it, they are politely providing a disclaimer that they could wield tremendous power that they don’t feel ethically comfortable with, and become the reluctant de-facto lords of a new global technofeudal society they don’t want to be responsible for, and you better choose a side: as an investor, an adversary, an advocate for ethics, or someone who’s willing to offer alternatives.
Khosla and the AI elites are among the best and brightest minds in technology, but despite the best of intentions and whether they are aware of their biases or not, Fear Uncertainty & Doubt (FUD) is a sales tactic to further inflate wildly speculative valuations in their enterprises and sell data center compute.

The U.S. state democratic apparatus has proven incapable of enacting such sweeping changes without an immanent crisis. The more likely outcome is that all “liberal” national governments will continue with business as usual like a slowly boiled frog as free market systems continue the trend toward what Yanis Varoufakis has labeled Technofeudalism, until a populist political crisis emerges, which history has repeatedly demonstrated is a precarious fork, often resulting in authoritarian regimes.
In past scenarios, the U.S. has enacted emergency measures, similar to the 2020 Covid crisis, or more apt in this case, the New Deal, which arguably wasn’t the catalyst for economic recovery — the total mobilization of the U.S. industrial apparatus toward war production was. The second world war was the only time in U.S. history that the government engaged in command economics via massive deficit spending, which worked because all spending was channeled directly into urgently needed productive activity by almost every able bodied citizen, not a vaguely defined utopian consumer society where individuals achieve status and meaning through abstract self-actualization.
The political attitudes of the U.S. population today are very different than those in the 1930s-1950s, when there was far less polarization and the traditions of self-reliance, common to agrarian societies were deeply rooted in the inter-generational ethos. No U.S. citizen in the 1930s expected their government to take care of them. Today, it’s a tacit assumption in the social contract.
UBI and command economics is dangerous territory, fraught with the inevitable concentration of power in state or corporate bureaucracies, even under the guise of democracy, which takes many forms. So-called democratic institutions can be far more tyrannical than a benevolent Monarchy. Throughout the 20th century, state socialism—an ideology that sought to replace private ownership with centralized state control of the economy—promised similar Utopian visions of equality, justice, and collective prosperity under the guise of democracy. But in practice, many of its most ambitious implementations devolved into sprawling bureaucracies marked by corruption, inefficiency, and the systematic erosion of individual freedoms.
The lesson of those failed experiments in government is not that collective ideals are inherently flawed, but that when power is concentrated without accountability, even the most Utopian visions can curdle into authoritarianism. The challenge remains: how to build systems that are both equitable and free—where the state serves the people, not the other way around. The most notable exception to the collapse of Soviet style state socialism is China.
Beginning in the late 1970s under Deng Xiaoping, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) initiated a series of market reforms that would transform the country from a rigid command economy into a hybrid model of “socialism with Chinese characteristics.” The result was a staggering economic metamorphosis: over 800 million people lifted out of poverty, a middle class numbering in the hundreds of millions, and the emergence of China as a global technological powerhouse.
But this transformation was not a pivot to capitalism. It was a recalibration of state socialism—one that retained centralized political control while selectively embracing market mechanisms. State-owned enterprises (SOEs) were restructured, not dismantled. Local governments were empowered to experiment with economic zones. And the CCP maintained its grip on the “commanding heights” of the economy, even as it allowed private enterprise to flourish beneath them.
Now, as AI threatens to automate vast swaths of human labor, China may once again be pioneering a new model: one where the state plays a central role in managing the collective ownership of capital in a post-labor economy.
China’s approach to AI is not laissez-faire. It is industrial policy at full throttle. In 2025 alone, China is projected to invest up to $98 billion in AI development, with $56 billion coming directly from government sources. This includes a national AI investment fund worth over $8.2 billion, designed to seed startups and accelerate innovation across sectors. Unlike the U.S., where AI development is largely driven by private tech giants, China’s strategy is deeply state-led—coordinating infrastructure, talent pipelines, and compute resources through a centralized vision.
This model of “state venture capitalism” is already reshaping how capital is allocated. Over the past decade, Chinese government venture capital funds have invested $912 billion, with nearly a quarter directed toward AI-related firms. These funds are not just concentrated in wealthy coastal cities—they’re distributed across provinces, signaling a deliberate effort to democratize access to the AI economy.
What emerges is a provocative glimpse of how a future government might manage collective capital in a world where labor is no longer the primary engine of value. Instead of relying on wages to distribute wealth, the state would act as a steward of national capital—investing in technologies, redistributing returns, and ensuring that the benefits of automation are shared across society.
Pragmatically speaking, such a social contract is fair, and many if not most Chinese agree, as it conforms to a civilization’s long history rooted in Confucian ideology.
Of course, this model is not without its contradictions. China’s AI policy is also a tool of geopolitical ambition and domestic control. Surveillance technologies, facial recognition, and predictive policing are deeply embedded in the same AI infrastructure that powers economic growth. The same state that invests in collective prosperity also curates dissent and censors information.
Yet for all its tensions, China’s evolving system offers a radical counterpoint to Western models of techno-capitalism. It suggests that in a post-labor world, the question may not be whether capital is privately or publicly owned—but how it is governed, and for whom it works.
The Chinese Communist Party’s benevolent authoritarian model is naturally equipped for a post-labor future, already pouring billions into centralized planning of AI, public investment, and tight integration between government and tech giants. The result is rapid innovation—but also a concentration of power that raises concerns about surveillance, censorship, and authoritarian control.
Democratic thinkers and institutions are proposing alternative models rooted in transparency, decentralization, and public participation. These include cooperative AI platforms, community-owned data trusts, and treating AI as a public utility. Such transitions will no doubt encounter stiff resistance and conflict among the liberal democratic nation states of the west where the values of individual liberty, private property rights, privacy and autonomy are considered paramount, even if it’s at the expense of equality. While slower and more complex to implement, these radically new frameworks of ownership may precariously balance the benefits of automation and democratic values.
The choice between these models is more than a policy debate—it’s a defining question of the 21st century: Who will own the future, and how will it be governed?
